Today we remember the crew of the Challenger space shuttle, which was lost shortly after launch on this day in 1986. The crew of seven included Commander Dick Scobee; Pilot Michael J. Smith; Mission Specialists Judith Resnik, Ronald E. McNair (the second black American in space), Ellison Onizuka (the first Asian American in space); Payload Specialist Gregory Jarvis; and educator and public servant Christa McAuliffe.
