The #ElPaso37 caravan was an incredible success. Coming in the midst of the release of two of the detainees on parole, Naindeep Chann of Jakara Movement was able to go inside the facility and visit. We know now what the remaining detainees–42 men and 4 women–need, and more about how to help.
Thanks to everyone who has supported the tour, both in person and online! You can find more photos, recaps, video, and give to offset the cost of driving 2,300 miles here: http://elpaso37.org/ - CM

Inspired by Harvard, Oxford, and others, students of color at New York University launched I, Too, Am NYU to speak out against on-campus racism and discrimination.
In the process–amidst hate, criticism, and suppression from peers and administrators–they’re looking to turn on-campus “diversity” from a branding opportunity to a reality. -MTP

An NYPD Public Relations Campaign, Derailed

A lesson in PR: the NYPD launched a twitter campaign encouraging New Yorkers to tweet pictures with their friendly neighborhood cops with the hashtag #MyNYPD.
Probably not the best idea, when many community members associate a police presence with being stopped, questioned, frisked, and assaulted–the hashtag was quickly derailed by users who took the opportunity to highlight images and experiences with police brutality and racial profiling.
