The internet turns 25 today, and if anything, internet has only become more serious business.

Unless we have an open, neutral Internet we can rely on without worrying about what’s happening at the back door, we can’t have open government, good democracy, good healthcare, connected communities and diversity of culture.“ - Tim Berners-Lee, on net neutrality

The internet might be a key part of daily life, but it’s not guaranteed. Read more on the fight for net neutrality.

But it’s a fine line between self-expressive and being exotified and commodified. You think you chose to be creative — but in actuality you were plucked by your employer to sell an object. I believe the object you are selling is high-waisted pants, but it’s unclear from the photo. They are rolled down so suggestively. What American Apparel is selling is sex, and in this case, by having “Made in Bangladesh” across your bare breasts, you are selling fetishized sex. One where the brown woman is objectified.

-Taz Ahmed, “I Am Made in Bangladesh Too,” The Aerogram

“This leaflet [shown in the bottom image], now being sent to American servicemen, exemplifies the exploitation of Asian women and perpetuates their stereotype. We, as Amerasian women, will continue to resist this exploitation in our struggle for liberation.”

Right wing groups like the 80-20 Initiative are trying to scare Asian American families into opposing SCA 5 and asking their state legislators to stand up against “racism.”

Dear right-wingers: you can’t weaponize the 14th amendment to drive a wedge between Asian Americans and other people of color.

Dr. OiYan Poon writes clearly about why their arguments are simple fearmongering. Don’t buy the crap they’re selling. SCA 5 is not a ballot measure that would “exclude” Asian Americans from California’s public universities.

49 years ago today, Alabama state troopers attacked the 525 people who marched from Selma to Montgomery, protesting the death of Jimmie Lee Jackson, a demonstrator shot by police in February.

The New York Times reported 57 injuries in what would become known as Bloody Sunday.

“I fought in World War II, and I once was captured by the German army, and I want to tell you that the Germans never were as inhuman as the state troopers of Alabama.” - Hosea Williams

“Instead of deciding based on misinformation or fear, and worrying about narrow group interests, we can have a more principled conversation about whether a racially diverse college-educated population is important for a stable and equitable California. Proponents of affirmative action will also need to make a much stronger case for why existing programs to ensure diversity are insufficient, including one that admits the top 9% of students from most high schools in the state.”

Karthick Ramakrishnan, “Affirmative Action at California colleges: a debate based on fear," Los Angeles Times, 3/7/2014

Quite honestly, the Asian American groups who have been so rabidly out against affirmative action are kind of freaking me out.
