In 2000, Congress passed the Hmong Veterans Naturalization Act, extending citizenship to Hmong Americans who came to the U.S. as refugees and served in the Special Guerrilla Unit, but these veterans still don’t have access to veterans benefits like medical treatment at VA hospitals or military burials.

Y'all. I hope you’ve been able to get in touch with family and friends in the Philippines. I know some folks haven’t yet and it’s super stressful. If it means anything, I just want you to know that we at 18MR are holding you and your loved ones in our thoughts (as we also search for some of ours).
If you haven’t tried Google Person Finder yet, they’re tracking almost 40k records as of this morning.
Finally, don’t forget to take care of yourself, too, okay? Dealing with the stress and fear of looking for loved ones is really intense. Let us know if we can share anything that will help you or your folks. <3
As the death toll climbs in the Philippines, we can’t help but look forward to next week–the COP19 climate change meeting in Warsaw–and remember last year’s COP18 in Doha, which took place after Typhoon Bopha devastated the Philippines.
Watch lead negotiator Nadarev Sano’s impassioned plea. Typhoon Haiyan is absolutely a story about climate change.
Captain America in a turban! I filmed this fun segment with SIKH CAPTAIN AMERICA for “Totally Biased with W, Kamau Bell.”
This is the funniest Hari segment I’ve seen in a while. 10/10 would recommend.
Last night supporters gathered outside the Dearborn Heights, MI police station calling for justice for Renisha McBride, who was shot by a Dearborn Heights homeowner when she approached his home after a car accident on Saturday. McBride was from Detroit. Dearborn Heights is a predominantly white suburb of Detroit. The shooter hasn’t been arraigned on charges, and the county prosecutor said they won’t pursue charges until they get more information from the Dearborn Heights police.
Yesterday, the homeowner claimed the gun discharge was an “accident.”
Today, his attorney claims he was “justified” in using lethal force.
Seeking help after a car accident in a white neighborhood should not be a death sentence for a black teenager. Once again, the incident, the excuses, and the coverup all point to a lack of regard for a young woman’s life.
Black lives matter. We’re heartbroken and outraged.
Huffington Post has the most complete snapshot of why our communities don’t need Wal-Mart and its bad business practices. We support Wal-Mart workers on strike!

As the Philippines weathers Typhoon Haiyan and begins to assess the damage, we want to send our love to all of you who have family and friends in the Philippines, and our prayers and good vibes to everyone in the storm’s path.
